DELHI MEMORIAL (INDIA GATE)

5.11.2003 : Please note that at present it is only possible to get within 50 yards of the memorial due to security arrangements in Delhi, and access to be able to read the names on the memorial is restricted. The Delhi Memorial (India Gate) stands at the eastern end of the Rajpath, or Kingsway. Of the 13,300 Commonwealth servicemen commemorated by name on the memorial, just over 1,000 lie in cemeteries to the west of the River Indus, where maintenance was not possible. The remainder died in fighting on or beyond the North West Frontier and during the Third Afghan War, and have no known grave. The Delhi Memorial also acts as a national memorial to all the 70,000 soldiers of undivided India who served and died in every main theatre of operations except Italy during the First World War, the majority of whom are commemorated by name outside the confines of India. The memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on telephone number 01628 507200. Gauhati, the capital city of the state of Assam in North East India is on the Eastern side of the River Brahmaputra some 600 kilometres east of Calcutta. It is best reached by air either from Delhi or Calcutta. The war cemetery is in the residential area of Silpukhuri on Navagraha Road, leading to Navagraha Hindu Temple which is situated on the hill top past the war cemetery. There is a Caretaker residing on site who keeps the register of the graves in his bungalow. He can be contacted on 00 91 361 2662860. Office Hours: Monday to Saturday 07.00 to 11.00 and 13.00 to 17.00. Gauhati War Cemetery was started during the Second World War for burials from the several military hospitals posted in the area. Later, other graves were brought in by the Army Graves Service from Amari Bari Military Cemetery, Sylhet Military Cemetery, Mohachara Cemetery, Nowgong Civil Cemetery and Gauhati Civil Cemetery, where permanent maintenance could not be assured. For the same reason, further graves were brought to the cemetery from isolated sites in the Lushai Hills and from civil cemeteries in Badarpur, Cooch Bahar, Darjeeling, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dinjan, Katapahar, Lebong, Lumding, Shillong and Silchar, in 1952. There are now 486 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. 25 of the burials are unidentified. The cemetery also contains 35 Chinese and Japanese war graves, and two non-war graves.

KIRKEE 1939-1945 MEMORIAL

The cemetery is constructed approximately 4 metres below the level of the main road, with the only means of access being down two flights of steps. The design of this site therefore makes wheelchair access impossible. Kirkee, also known as Khadki, is a Military Cantonment adjoining the large university town of Poona on the Plateau above Bombay. It can be reached by train from Bombay to Poona or by long distance taxi service from Dada Taxi Stand, Bombay. There are direct flights from Bombay, Madras and Delhi but these tend to be irregular. Taxis and Motor Rickshaws are available from Poona Railway Station. To reach Kirkee War Cemetery, in which the memorial stands, one must ask for Mula Road along which the cemetery is located. One way is to cross the Sangam Bridge and follow the road which has the River Mula on its right. The CWGC road direction board is on a crossroads with the Bombay Poona Road. The cemetery is situated on the right hand side and backs onto the river. From the railway station follow the way via Juna Bazar, Sangam Bridge, past the Engineering college, over Wakdewadi Bridge, past Bajaj Kamal Nayan Udyan and onto Bhayawadi and Mula Roads. From the airport, one reaches Ahmadnagar Road which joins onto Nagar Road followed by Deccan College Road; over the Holkar Bridge and, keeping left at the junction with Elphinson road, one enters Mula Road. The cemetery is a short distance away on the left hand side of the road. The Commonwealth War Graves road direction sign is situated at the junctions of Elphinson Road and Mula Road, but it should be noted that this is often hidden from view by Market Stalls. The KIRKEE MEMORIAL commemorates almost 200 East and West African servicemen who died in non-operational zones in India in the Second World War, and whose graves either cannot be located or are so situated that maintenance is not possible. On the same memorial are commemorated more than 1,800 servicemen who died in India during the First World War, who are buried in civil and cantonment cemeteries in India and Pakistan where their graves can no longer be properly maintained. This total includes the names of 639 servicemen whose remains were brought from Bombay (Sewri) Cemetery for re-interment here in 1960. The memorial stands within KIRKEE WAR CEMETERY, which was created to receive Second World War graves from the western and central parts of India where their permanent maintenance could not be assured. The cemetery contains 1668 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.

RANCHI WAR CEMETERY

The cemetery is open Monday to Friday and Saturday morning: it is closed all day Sunday. There is no residential Caretaker on site and the gate is locked between 5pm and 8am. During working hours the cemetery register can be obtained from one of the gardeners. Ranchi is a town in the State of Jharkhand (formerly Bihar) some 400 kilometres north-west of Calcutta. It can be reached by air from Delhi, Calcutta and a number of other cities. Ranchi War Cemetery is on Old Hazari Bagh Road about 2 kilometres from Ranchi railway station. It is situated next to the Christian cemetery near Kantatoli Chowk. The Cemetery entrance being several metres off the road can easily be missed, and few taxi drivers know the way. Visitors should contact their hotel manager for guidance. After the fall of Rangoon in March 1942, the probability that the Japanese would occupy the whole of Burma constituted a grave threat to India and Ceylon. The forces available for defence were dangerously weak; apart from those deployed on the north-west frontier and on internal security, there were only seven divisions, and these lacked ancillary troops and equipment. The air force and airfields were inadequate and the fleet as a whole was in no position to dispute command of the Bay of Bengal. In March and April 1942, 100,000 tons of shipping were sunk in the bay. Internal disturbances in India presented an additional threat, and some of the worst troubles occurred in districts of Bihar. In May 1942 five further divisions reached India, followed in June by two more, and the air force strength was increased. Ranchi became an important base, and the 70th Division, less one brigade in Ceylon, was posted there to meet any sea-borne attack on the Orissa coast, and to form the only reserve to support Assam or Bengal. The cemetery was begun on 1 June 1942 by the army, and used until the end of the war. Afterwards graves from isolated positions and small inaccessible cemeteries were brought in, and in 1952, more than 200 graves were transferred to the cemetery from twelve civil cemeteries. Ranchi is the smallest 'concentration' cemetery in India. There are now 704 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery.
