The cemetery, about 3 kilometres from the city centre, is situated in Commercial Rd, adjacent to the junction with Fitzpatrick Rd. The military plot (11C), with Cross of Sacrifice, is situated to the right of the main avenue distant from the entrance, and there is another group of war graves to the left of the avenue. The other graves are scattered throughout the cemetery.

Historical notes:

During the Second World War, the Empire Air Training Scheme operated at No 41 Air School at East London and the local Provincial Hospital included a military wing. There are 11 First World War and 117 Second World War casualties in this cemetery.

Location notes:

Grahamstown is about 120 kilometres north-east of Port Elizabeth. Follow the Port Elizabeth road up to the Industrial Area/Rautenbach Road sign. Turn right, then right again into the cemetery. The military block consists of two rows in the BESL Block.

Historical notes:

A section of the cemetery was granted to the South African Legion (then known as the BESL) for the burial of ex-servicemen. When casualties occurred amongst those training at the local airfield, where No 44 Air School of the Empire Air Training Scheme was based, it was decided that burials should be effected in this plot.

Historical notes:

During the Second World War, the local provincial hospital operated a military wing. No 42 Air School was based on the aerodrome on the outskirts of the city and No 43 Air School at nearby Port Alfred. PORT ELIZABETH (SOUTH END) CEMETERY

Location notes:

This cemetery, which belongs to the Municipality, is situated on Forest Hill Road in the suburb of South End. From the intersection of Humewood Road, which leads along the beach front, follow La Rocher Drive in the direction of the airport for 2.2 kilometres. Turn right into Forest Hill Drive and the cemetery is on the left. The majority of the graves are in the 1939/1945 military plot (H Extension) and the rest are scattered throughout the cemetery.

Historical notes:

During the Second World War, the local provincial hospital operated a military wing. No 42 Air School was based on the aerodrome on the outskirts of the city and No 43 Air School at nearby Port Alfred. Port Elizabeth (South End) Cemetery contains 16 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 126 from the Second World War.
