Only son of Mr. and Mrs. E. (Teddy) Bayliffe, and the grandson of Mrs. Wilson and the late Mr. S. P. Wilson, who for a number of years was cashier at the Hodbarrow Mines. Duncan, like his father and mother was born in Millom and he attended the Holborn Hill Boy's School. The family then went to live at Kendal where he attended the Kendal Grammar School. About seven years ago Mr. Bayliffe went to South Africa, and his wife and son followed about 12 months later, and Duncan finished his schooling at the King Edward Grammar School. On leaving he went to work at the mines offices at Venterspost, near Johannesburg. On the outbreak of war he joined one of the South African regiments and along with his comrades went on active service. In a letter he said that he liked the life and intended making it his profession.
