Son of Neil and Agnes McCallum (nee Lamont), of 139 Weir Street, Glasgow, Scotland. Born 1895 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. A grocer. Hugh settled in South Africa in 1910, aged 16. Lived in Jeppestown, Johannesburg. His nephew Hugh Crawford McCallum (his namesake) died in service in WW2.
