When war broke out he was at Cambridge studying Engineering and joined the Royal Naval Air Service. Sent to Eastern France and conducted many raids from Belfort and won the French Croix de Guerre. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. At School from January 1911 to December 1912.
