Son of Harry Edwin and Ethel May Smith, of Saxonwold, Johannesburg. Born Johannesburg. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. Feb. 1932-Dec. 1935. Espin. IV-VI, Prefect, J.C. '33, Mat. '35. With Wits. Univ., Mining B.Sc. '40. Lt. SAAF. Mentioned in the press (March) for sterling work against the Axis forces in Tunisia. Joined the SAAF within a day of obtaining his degree, subsequently passed second out of a school of 40 pupils on getting his wings. Posted to No. 1 Fighter Sqdn he operated in Libya till the withdrawl to Aalmein, and afterwards was a Spitfire fighter pilot escort to Mr. Churchill in Egypt while on his way to Moscow, and again from Egypt to Tripolitania, where he was presented to Britian's Leader on landing at Castel Benito aerodrome. Out of five officers presented, Harold was the only one below the rank of Major.
