Son of Hugh Earle Welby and Evelyn Borradaile Welby, of Essex Vale, Southern Rhodesia. Entered Lloyd House in September 1927. On leaving school in August 1934, he went mining and was at the Bushtick Mine when he joined the R.A.F. in July 1940. School Record : House- Prefect, 1933; school Prefect, 1934; Sergeant in Cadet ,corps, 1934; Rugger 1st XV, 1932-34 (Captain and Colours, 1934); Cricket 1st XI, 1934. Took an active and prominent part in athletics, swimming, boxing and Dramatic Society: Junior Certificate, 1932. On Plumtree School Roll of Honour
