Information:
Son of Col. Duncan Campbell, O.B.E., D.L., and Isabel Campbell (nee Tobin). of Inverneill, Ardrishaig, Argyll; husband of Catherine Isabel Vertue or Campbell, of 6, Hull St., Kimberley, South Africa. Served in 18th Mounted Rifles and Hay Commando through German S.W. Africa Campaign. He was educated at Cargilfield and Rugby. Early showing a desire for the life of the Colonies, he went to the Agricultural College, Cape Town, and then took up a position on the Pickstore Fruit Farms. On the outbreak of the rebellion in South Africa in 1914, he enlisted as a trooper in the 18th Mounted Rifles. He served throughout the rebellion, and then through the German South-West Africa campaign as Lieutenant and Adjutant of the Hay Commando. On the conclusion of that campaign and the disbandment of the Hay Commando, he sailed for home, and received a commission in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He went to the front early in January 1917. His senior officer writes, - "He died most gallantly, upholding the best traditions of the Highlanders, and to the last minute of his life, as always, self was forgotten, and his chief thought was his men". He married a daughter of Alfred Vertue, and leaves two children.
