Volunteered 4th August, 1914, and served in Rebellion and German South West Africa with the Imperial Light Horse. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. It is believed a plaque on his grave reads "The death of this South African Soldier was the inspiration behind the annual two-minute pause at 11 o'clock on the 11 November throughout the British Empire for fallen soldiers.
