Cause of Death:
Killed in action, Kittyhawk IV FX536, shot down, near Fano, Italy, during a bombing mission against German ack-ack. Gater probably tried to land with his plane shot. He had a wound on his head. Two days passed and finally the owner of that field (Mr. Castellani) buried Gater (Germans refused to do it).
