LG 21 October 1941 pg. 6086 - "For conspicuous gallantry in action. On the 27th January, 1941, at DIGH MERER, Capt. A. W. Briscoe was in a trench which received a direct hit from an anti-personal air bomb resulting in a number of casualties to the inmates of the trench. Although badly concussed Captain Briscoe was assisting in removing the wounded and dead from the trench when he saw a truck in danger of catching fire from a blazing petrol case dump nearby. He immediately removed the truck and helped extinguish the burning petrol cases. On the 19th February, 1941, "A" Company under the command of Captain Briscoe, was ordered to leave IONTE and take up a position astride the GUIMBO-GELIB-IONTE cross roads. Whilst in the open ground midway between IONTE and the GUIMBO-GELIB Road, "A" Company was engaged by the full Battalion of the 193 Col. Infantry supported by four 7 pounder guns and two A.A. BREDA guns. Captain Briscoe pushed home an attack with such vigour that before the arrival of the Armoured Cars, which had been sent from IONTE to support him, his Company had inflicted great damage and were already outflanking the enemy, having almost reached their objective in the face of accurate rifle, machine gun and artillery fire. During this action Captain Briscoe displayed great personal courage and handled his Company skillfully and resolutely." |
