 LG Sup 26 July 1945 pg. 3860 - "Following his capture at TOBRUK on 21 Jun 42, CARTER was imprisoned at BENGHAZI, TUTURANO and LATERINA (Camp 82). Escaping from the column of prisoners being marched to the station for transfer to GERMANY on 17 Sep 43, CARTER hid nearby for 10 days with two companions; he then moved to CAMPO GIALLI, where he remained until his recapture on 8 Dec 43. As CARTER fell ill towards the middle of December, he was taken to an Italian hospital in FLORENCE. Learning in February 44 that he was to be sent to GERMANY the following day, he escaped through a window of the hospital, clad only in pyjamas. He was found by two Fascists within two hours and handed over to the Germans at ROVEZZANO Camp. The next evening he and another P/W scaled the camp wall; although the guards opened fire and his companion was hit, CARTER escaped. Returning to CAMPO GIALLO he awaited the Allied advance and on 4 Aug 44 he reported to a South African unit."
