Son of Walter Harry and May Whittle, of the Natal Colliery Company, Northern Natal. Born Doneigharey, County Down, Ireland. Educated Durban High School 1902-1905; Dulwich College, London 1908-1911. An insurance clerk. When war broke out, he joined the Artists Rifles (28th Battalion London Regiment) and travelled with them to France in October 1914; gazetted temporary Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, Worcester Regiment February 1915; fought in the Battle of Neuve Chappelle March 1915.
