Son of Capt. George Harry Forsythe, Legion of Frontiersmen, and Catherine Maud Forsythe, of Gosport, Hampshire. Born Johannesburg. Educated Park School, Turffontein, Johannesburg; General Botha Cadet Draft 1935-6. After training in General Botha, Robert James Harry Forsythe joined the RN as seaman and posted to HMS Bridgewater and later HMS Impregnable. He served in HMS Bramble, in the North Atlantic in 1940 and 1941.
