Son of Sydney John and Wilhelmina Abrams, of Natal, South Africa; husband of Phyllis Mabel Abrams, of 8, Caithness Rd., Brook Green, London. Born Umzinto, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Educated Durban High School, Peterhouse College, and Cambridge University where in 1904 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. On 1st October 1910 he married Phyllis Mabel Godfrey (also spelt Godfree) at St George's Church, Hanover Square, London. He went to Whitgift School, Croydon temporarily, to take the place of one of the staff who was on service, and he occasionally played for the Old Whitgift Cricket Club, before he then joined up in December 1915 serving in the Army Service Corps as the Director of Transport at Havre in France.
