Son of William Ellerton Ryan Fry and Janetta Margaret Elizabeth Fry, of Somerset West, Cape Province, South Africa. B.Sc., Hons. (Lond.). Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as a Probationary College Apprentice in January 1935 and returned as a College Apprentice in October 1938. When war broke out in 1939, he was living in Denmark and working in a brewery. He left for England leaving behind his Danish fiance Bodil, whom he would never see again. Joined the RAFVR in which he held the rank of Pilot Officer and was mobilised in September 1939. Later promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
