Son of David and Annie Hurst. Husband of Elsie Mary Hurst, of 118 Park Street, Belgravia, Johannesburg. Born Southall Green, Middlesex. Enlisted for the British army and joined the North Lancashire Regiment on 1st July 1897 aged 17; signing up for 6 years. A railway clerk. Injured in France in 1917 and was discharged on medical grounds in February 1918.
