Cause of Death: |
Killed in action, Sopwith Camel single-seat fighter #D1837, He took off from his airfield on a low-level tactical patrol over the fiercely contested frontline sector around Bailleul in northern France. During this phase of the German Spring Offensive, fighter squadrons were ordered to fly extremely low to strafe advancing infantry and bombing columns. His flight was intercepted by German fighter aircraft. Air history records note that his Sopwith Camel was last seen engaging in combat over Bailleul. Subsequent cross-referencing of German aviation records suggests he was targeted and shot down near Vieux-Berquin by Leutnant Paul Strahle, a highly decorated ace commanding Jasta 57. |
