Killed in action, Lancaster I R5493, took off from Waddington at 1950 24 Mar 1942 to lay mines in French waters off Lorient (Artichokes Region). Believed to have been shot down by flak from the Ile de Croix. A sea plot was heard from the aircraft around 23:00 hours
