Information:
Son of Adam Whitson Myles (Town Clerk, Glasgow), and Hannah Thompson Myles, of Yatesfield, Rochester, Northumberland. Born Forfar, Angus, Scotland. The family moved to Glasgow, where Adam became Town Clerk and an acknowledged expert on local government. After attending Kelvinside Academy and Fettes College, John matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1913 to study for an Arts degree. In his first year he took Ordinary Latin, Greek, and Political Economy. He enjoyed a game of golf and was a member at Douglas Park, Hillfoot, Milngavie. Shortly after passing his exams, however, he accepted a commission in the Highland Light Infantry in the autumn of 1914 and went off to war. ref. South African Roll of Honour 1914-1918
