Son of Adam Young Niven and Gertrude Elizabeth Niven (nee Dodds), of Johannesburg, South Africa. Also served in German West Africa in 1914/1915. Educated from 1908 to 1912 at Hilton College, Natal, and 1913 at Jeppe High School, Johannesburg, Transvaal where he matriculated. He was one of the School's most prominent runners. When the war broke out he was studying at the School of Mines. On Jeppe High School for Boys Roll of Honour
