Son of Lt. Col. The Hon. Frederick Spence Tatham, D.S.O., and Ada Susan Tatham, of Parkside, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. Born Pietermaritzburg. Educated Michaelhouse, Balgowan; Royal Naval College 1910-1912; Dartmouth College 1912-1914. Entered Royal Navy on the nomination of the Govt. of South Africa. Native of Natal. His brother also died on service. Commemorated on the Michaelhouse WWI Memorial. Commeorated on WWI Memorial Cross outside the Cathedral of the Holy Nativity, Pietermaritzburg. He was the very first South African submariner to lose his life.
