Cause of Death: |
On February 12, 1941, SS Derrynane was in convoy SLS.64, with a cargo of iron ore from Lourenco Marques, when the convoy was attacked by the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper. The position was 37.12N, 21.20W (about 400 miles S.E. of the Azores). Derrynane was the second vessel to be hit by shellfire and blew up killing all those on board; the master (Earnest Joice), thirty four crew members and one DEMS gunner. |
