Died in Shooting Incident. One of the more unsavoury incidents in the recent South African Navy History occurred aboard SAS East London while she was alongside in Naval Base Simonstown. At 01h15 in the morning, Able Seaman Wiseman Sifiso MCHUNU a member of the Ships Company allegedly walked into the cabin of Sub-Lieutenant John Fred CLARKSON who was asleep at the time and fired two shots, hitting CLARKSON in the head and killing him instantly. Able Seaman MCHUNU then turned the gun on himself. Suffering from a Self-inflicted Gunshot wound to the head, the critically injured MCHUNU was admitted to 2 Military Hospital in Wynberg where he died shortly before 08h00 the same morning. A board of Enquiry was convened to fully investigate the incident but the findings and recommendations by the Board are unknown |
