At 23.59 hours on 6 Dec, 1942, the Henry Stanley (Master Richard Jones), dispersed from convoy ON-149, was hit in the foreship by one torpedo from U-103 about 580 miles northwest of the Azores. The survivors abandoned ship and were questioned by the Germans, who took the master as prisoner on board. He was landed at Lorient on 29 December and taken to the POW camp Milag Nord. At 01.40 hours, the ship was hit aft of the bridge by a coup de grĂ¢ce and disintegrated in a big explosion. The lifeboats were never seen again: 44 crew members, eight gunners and 11 passengers were lost.
