Son of William Henry and Lola Gray, of Dorrington, Athlone, Ireland. Late of 1st Rhodesian Regt. Born in Kilkenny West, Westmeath, Ireland he disclosed previous military service on his attestation document signed 23rd August 1915 in Potchefstroom as BSAP three and a half years, Border Mounted Rifles two years and nine months in the 1st Rhodesia Regiment. Although 37 years old he was still single. His occupation is recorded as overseer and the 1917 Roll of Persons who have left Southern Rhodesia for Active Service shows he was employed by B & M & R R.
