Son of Andrew de la Rey and Maria Magdalena Louw (nee Middleton), of Qora Mouth, Transkei. Born Voortrekkerhoogte. Educated at Wynberg Boy's High School. He served 2 years as a cadet on the SATS General Botha. Posted to the WD/DLR on the 29th June 1944.
