Husband of Katrine Alice McKillop, of Johannesburg, South Africa. Born at Oban, Scotland. James Bunting McKillop was born in Oban on 15 July 1879. He was educated at Oban High School and Glasgow University. Living in Johannesburg and a Tobacconist by occupation, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 5 January 1916, as a Sergeant in the South African Scottish Regiment. He was serving in the 4th South African Infantry when he applied for admission to an officer cadet unit. He had previously served as Trooper for 2 years 9 months in the Scottish Horse Volunteers, 1 year in the Transvaal Scottish Volunteers and 1 year in the Imperial Light Horse. He was commissioned into the 5th Battalion Scottish Rifles on 31 July 1918.
