Son of Thomas Owen and Hylda Mary Richards, of Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia. Entered Gaul House in January, 1938. Having passed the Cambridge School Certificate Examination, Richards left Plumbtree in April, 1940, and shortly afterwards he attested in the R.A.F., receiving his preliminary training in Rhodesia before proceeding overseas. On Plumtree School Roll of Honour
