Served with Durban Light Infantry in the 1914 Rebellion and in GSWA in 1915. Commemorated on Castle School, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England; St Mary's Church, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England; the Durban Light Infantry; the Durban Corporation & Durban Cenotaph WWI Memorials. Commemorated on his daughter's gravestone in Thornbury Cemetery, Bristol, England. His brother Captain Frederick Charles Smith US Infantry also died 1 January 1919
