Killed in action, at 10.42 hours on 19 July 1941 the Holmside (Master Norman Caulfield), dispersed from convoy OG-67, was hit by three torpedoes from U-66 and sank within 15 minutes northeast of the Cape Verde Islands. During a first attack the ship had been missed with two stern and two bow torpedoes between 03.16 and 03.23 hours. 18 crew members and three gunners were lost. The master, 13 crew members and two gunners were picked up by the Portuguese steam merchant Sete Cidades and landed at Lisbon on 1 August |
