Son of Rodney Arthur Bartholomew, a journalist, and Kathleen Bartholomew (nee O'Connor). Born Cape Town. Granted Short Service Commission as Probationary Pilot Officer, 12 July 1937. Undertook his flying training at 9 FTS, Hullavington from 17 July 1937, and joined his first operational unit, 41 (F) Squadron (Fury II) at Catterick, on 19 February 1938. He was posted to 80 (F) Squadron (Gladiator I) at Debden on 27 April 1938, and embarked London for Egypt with the squadron on 30 April 1938.
