 Reported missing on the night of 1 July 1999 while participating in a night exercise. Despite an intensive search of the area, nothing more was heard from him until 14 July 1999 when a search team patrolling the coastline, found his body washed ashore at the 16-Mile Beach beyond Yzerfontein
