Commended for bravery during shootout with insurgents in Mpumalanga Township near Pietermaritzburg in 1988. ref. Gallantry Awards of the South African Police 1913-1994. The shooting took place on the N2 south bound and on the Durban side of the Hammersdale off ramp. The Major had given Ngcobo a lift and was shot when he dropped him off. The Major was not armed at the time of the shooting. Constable Ngcobo was later shot and killed in custody when he went for a firearm (shotgun)
