Son of Sidney and Frances Y. Cuthbert. Husband of Kathleen Cuthbert, O.B.E. (now Lady Rayleigh, of Beaufront Castle, Hexham, Northumberland, and Terling Place, Chelmsford). Born Melster, Pietermaritizburg, South Africa. Educated Sandroyd, Eton and Royal Military College. Won the Army Revolver Championship in 1904, and published "The 1st Battalion Scots Guards in South Africa, 1899-1902". His sons Gerald Ivo Cuthbert and Sidney John Cuthbert fell in the 1939-1945 war.
