At the outbreak of war, he left Christ Church and joined the Royal Horse Artillery. He served throughout the North African Campaign. On Ruzawi Preparatory School War Memorial, near Marandellas, Rhodesia. Commemorated on Christ Church, St Aldate's, Oxford War Memorial. Commemorated on wall plaque at St Etheldreda?s Church, Hatfield.
