LG Sup 4 November 1941 pg. 6368 - "This officer has completed 42 operational sorties involving 340 flying hours. He carried out nine daylight and three night raids on Italian East Africa, flying Wellesley aircraft, and later completed many missions as pilot in Wellington aircraft. On 8th August, 1941, Flight Lieutenant Abbott was pilot of an aircraft which was detailed to carry out a mine-laying operation at the southeast entrance to the Corinth Canal. Despite intense anti-aircraft fire and although his aircraft was clearly visible in the full light of the moon, he pressed home his attack against this difficult and limited objective and succeeded in dropping a mine a little way inside the entrance of the canal. Flight Lieutenant Abbott has displayed great fearlessness in pressing home his attacks and has obtained good results in all conditions. He has shown great leadership and set a fine example." |
